Journey of Faith: Living by the Spirit

(Devotional #1 in the “Refined by Faith” Series)

Scripture Focus

Romans 8:13–14 (NIV)
“For if you live according to the flesh, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body, you will live. For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God.”

Devotional

You would think that when God speaks — the Creator of the universe — humanity would lean in eagerly to hear His divine instruction. Yet so often, we ignore His Word, take His grace for granted, and allow the world to shape our hearts.

Don’t take your walk with Jesus lightly, as if heaven is guaranteed no matter how you live. We are called to fear God — not with terror, but with deep reverence and holy respect. When we allow the world to mold us, we risk serious spiritual harm.

Through the power of the Holy Spirit, we can put to death the misdeeds of the flesh and live as true children of God.
As Romans 12:2 reminds us: “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind...”

This isn’t passive faith. It’s a daily choice to surrender, renew, and walk differently. Too often, we toy with sin, entertaining it as if it were harmless — until suddenly, it grows and takes hold. Instead of running to the altar in repentance, we often wake up and repeat the sins of yesterday.

God’s Grace
Titus 2:11–12 (NIV) says: “For the grace of God has appeared that offers salvation to all people. It teaches us to say ‘No’ to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age.”

Here at Refined by Faith, we believe it is vital to take God at His Word — to live surrendered lives that reflect His holiness and love, even in our struggles. This isn’t about perfection; it’s about daily obedience, repentance, and dependence on the Holy Spirit.

Reflection Questions

  1. In what area of your life are you still living “according to the flesh”?

  2. What does it mean for you personally to live as a child of God?

  3. How can you renew your mind daily with God’s Word this week?

Prayer

Heavenly Father,
Thank You for Your Son, Jesus Christ, who gave His life for us. Transform us through Your Spirit to reflect His character. Help us surrender daily, obey joyfully, and walk in holiness.

Holy Spirit, guide our thoughts, words, and actions. Teach us to put to death the things that displease You and to walk in the joy of obedience.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Next Steps in Faith

  • Read Romans 8 in full this week

  • Journal one way you will surrender to the Spirit this week It all begins with an idea. Maybe you want to launch a business. Maybe you want to turn a hobby into something more. Or maybe you have a creative project to share with the world. Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.

Don’t worry about sounding professional. Sound like you. There are over 1.5 billion websites out there, but your story is what’s going to separate this one from the rest. If you read the words back and don’t hear your own voice in your head, that’s a good sign you still have more work to do.

Be clear, be confident and don’t overthink it. The beauty of your story is that it’s going to continue to evolve and your site can evolve with it. Your goal should be to make it feel right for right now. Later will take care of itself. It always does.
