The Holy Spirit is God; He is a person with emotions, intellect, and will. He is the third distinct Person revealed in the Trinity — coexistent, co‑eternal, and co‑equal. Being revealed third does not mean He is inferior to the Father or the Son.
The Trinity refers to the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit — each fully sharing the same eternal nature, divine essence, and limitless power. In this devotional, we will primarily focus on the Holy Spirit.
God’s nature — who He is
God’s essence — what He is
God’s power — what He can do
I am unsure how the confusion ever surfaced that the Holy Spirit is merely an impersonal force or just an influence. Scripture clarifies the mystery of who the Holy Spirit is — revealing His personhood, omniscience, omnipresence, and His eternality.
Reflection Question:
Do you personally have a clear understanding of who the Holy Spirit is — His personhood, His presence, and His role in your life?
Let’s read Genesis 1:26(NKJV): Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness.”
“Our likeness” refers to God’s attributes. Examples include:
Personality — intellect, emotion, will
Morality — the ability to choose good or evil
Relationality — designed for fellowship
Human beings consist of three components: body, soul, and spirit — reflecting the intentional design and complexity of God Almighty.
John 4:24 (KJV) God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.
Understanding that God is transcendent, without limitation, and operating outside of time reveals that He is the very source of time itself. He has no physical form, and let me speak truthfully: we must engage Him with our heart, mind, and soul — the inner being of a person — worshiping with sincerity.
Remove all distractions and focus your heart, mind, and soul on entering into the presence of the Lord.
Reflection Question:
When you worship, are you intentionally engaging God with your spirit — your inner being — or do distractions pull your heart and mind away?
As we continue, we will explore how the Holy Spirit works, leads, and transforms the life of every believer.
The Holy Spirit Speaks and Gives Instructions
What only a Person does.
The Holy Spirit does not operate as an impersonal force. Scripture consistently reveals Him speaking, directing, evaluating, commanding, and guiding — all actions of a divine Person with intellect, will, and authority.
Key Bible Verses — Let’s reflect and share insight
Acts 13:2 (NKJV) As they ministered to the Lord and fasted, the Holy Spirit said, “Now separate to Me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.”
Note: Only a Person can call, appoint, and assign individuals to a divine mission.
He Thinks, Evaluates, and Issues Judgment
Acts 8:29 (NKJV) Then the Spirit said to Philip, “Go near and overtake this chariot.”
Note: This reveals the Spirit’s ability to think, evaluate circumstances, and issue precise instruction.
He Monitors Situations and Speaks with Perfect Insight
Acts 10:19–20 (NKJV) While Peter thought about the vision, the Spirit said to him, “Behold, three men are seeking you. Arise therefore, go down and go with them, doubting nothing; for I have sent them.
Note: The Spirit demonstrates intellect, awareness, and sovereign decision-making — He evaluates the situation and directs with authority.
He Guides with Conscious Decision and Absolute Authority
Acts 11:12 (NKJV) Then the Spirit told me to go with them, doubting nothing. Moreover these six brethren accompanied me, and we entered the man’s house.
Note: The Spirit commands with full power and authority, guiding believers through deliberate, conscious instruction.
He Speaks Truth, Remembers, and Reveals
Acts 28:25 (NKJV) “The Holy Spirit spoke rightly through Isaiah the prophet to our fathers…”
Note: He has a mind, memory, and perfect recall.
Communicating truth was spoken long ago through the prophets.
Ephesians 4:30 (NIV) And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.
Note: This verse reveals the Holy Spirit’s emotional capacity — something only a person can possess. A force cannot be grieved. An influence cannot feel sorrow.
He feels deep sorrow and experiences distress
These passages reveal distinctly that the Holy Spirit:
His Intellect & Communication
Speaks
Thinks
Evaluating
Reveals truth
His Leadership & Authority
Commands
Decides
Guides
Exercises authority
These are not the actions of a force — they are the actions of God the Holy Spirit, the divine Person who interacts with His people.
Reflection Question:
The Holy Spirit never acts independently from the Father and the Son. How does that deepen your trust in His guidance and His work in your heart?
Eye Opener
There is a distinction between the Holy Spirit and the human conscience.
· Once a person accepts Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior, they receive the Holy Spirit.
· A non-believer's conscience is their inward moral compass for right and wrong.
Setting the Stage: The Holy Spirit's presence and power
From the very beginning, Scripture reveals the activity of the Spirit:
Genesis 1:2 (KJV) Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.
The Spirit of the living God is actively involved in creation. He also empowers believers to proclaim the Good News of Jesus Christ and to perform miracles in His name.
Ezekiel 36:27 (KJV)And I will put my spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes, and ye shall keep my judgments, and do them.
Human effort is imperfect; therefore, it cannot operate in God’s will or pursue righteousness on its own. The Holy Spirit works within believers, transforming the hearts of sinners so they can walk in obedience according to God’s Word.
Luke 1:35 (NKJV) And the angel answered and said to her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Highest will overshadow you; therefore, also, that Holy One who is to be born will be called the Son of God.
The statement “The Holy Spirit will come upon you” reveals the miraculous conception brought forth by the power of the Holy Spirit. Only God can perform such a miracle. This moment reveals not only the Spirit’s power in Christ’s conception but also His ongoing work of empowering, guiding, and transforming the lives of believers.
Reflection Question:
God has placed His Spirit within me to help me walk in obedience and share in an intimate relationship with Him. What area of my life is He asking me to surrender today?
Jesus’ Spirit‑Empowered Ministry
Isaiah 61:1-3(NKJV)
61 “The Spirit of the Lord God is upon Me,
Because the Lord has anointed Me
To preach good tidings to the poor;
He has sent Me to [a]heal the brokenhearted,
To proclaim liberty to the captives,
And the opening of the prison to those who are bound;
2 To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord,
And the day of vengeance of our God;
To comfort all who mourn,
3 To [b]console those who mourn in Zion,
To give them beauty for ashes,
The oil of joy for mourning,
The garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness;
That they may be called trees of righteousness,
The planting of the Lord, that He may be glorified.
Reflection Question:
The Spirit empowered Jesus to heal, restore, and proclaim freedom. How is the Holy Spirit inviting you to participate in His restoring work today — through prayer, kindness, or obedience?
The Spirit Descends on Jesus
Luke 3:21–22 (NKJV)And the Holy Spirit descended in bodily form like a dove upon Him, and a voice came from heaven which said, “You are My beloved Son; in You I am well pleased.”
Reflection Question:
The Holy Spirit rested on Jesus to empower His earthly mission. Am I willing to let the Spirit of God live through me?
(Me personally) Awe of the Indwelling Spirit
“My mind is blown — left in awe — every time I think about the Holy Spirit dwelling within a believer. The Holy Spirit worked through Jesus Christ’s earthly ministry, and Jesus’ ministry continues today through Christians around the world as the Holy Spirit now works in and through believers.”
Jesus Ascends — The Spirit Continues His Work
Acts 1:9 (NKJV) Now when He had spoken these things, while they watched, He was taken up, and a cloud received Him out of their sight.
Understand this truth: The Spirit keeps the life of Christ flowing through the believer.
Galatians 4:6 (NKJV) And because you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into your hearts, crying out, [a]“Abba, Father!”
Just as Jesus ascended and returned to the Father, the Holy Spirit was sent into our hearts to continue Christ’s life and ministry within us.
Reflection Question
What are your thoughts on the spiritual realm versus the earthly realm?
Putting It All Together: Walking in the Spirit
Let my life be pleasing to the Father
2 Timothy 3:16–17 (KJV) All Scripture is God‑breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training in righteousness, that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.
2 Peter 1:21 (NKJV) For prophecy never came by the will of man, but holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit.
“God‑breathed,” or inspired by God, means that God directed and guided the writing of Holy Scripture through human authors. Every translation expresses this truth by showing that Scripture was written under God’s supervision, not human wisdom alone.
Reflection Question
Am I positioning my heart to be available for the Spirit to use me in a broken world?
The Holy Spirit empowers believers — meaning the divine power of God strengthens and enables them to participate in His will.
· The term “to will” describes God shaping our desires toward what pleases Him.
· The term “to act” describes God giving us the strength to carry out those Spirit‑shaped desires.
Reflection Question
How do my personal ambitions interfere with the Holy Spirit’s work in me?
Acts 1:8 (NKJV) But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you; and you will be My witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.
The identity of a believer is demonstrated through courageous witness about Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection. Witnessing can be uncomfortable and may involve persecution. Jesus warned that representing Him would not be easy because the world rejects Him. True witnesses involve action, speech, lifestyle, and service.
Luke 12:12 (NKJV) For the Holy Spirit will teach you in that very hour what you ought to say.
This truth reveals that the Spirit will work through you at the exact moment you need Him — that is faith in action.
Reflection Question
How does my life align with God’s will, and am I obedient to the Holy Spirit?
Galatians 4:6 (NKJV) And because you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into your hearts, crying out, “Abba, Father!”
It is the Holy Spirit who draws us close to God, because we cannot do it on our own. The flesh stands in the way; it is only by God’s grace that the relationship exists. Apart from Jesus, we can do nothing but sin, because by nature we are a rebellious people.
Listen: Jesus meets believers at the front door of their heart. The Holy Spirit is the active, living presence of God who, by grace through faith, allows the Spirit of the Son to take residence in the hearts of God’s people. The Spirit of God speaks to the spirit of believers, and because of free will, when His instructions are given, you must choose whether to obey the Spirit or obey the flesh. Becoming a new creation in Christ requires obedience — it is the only way to grow into the likeness of Jesus.
Reflection Question
In the specific area of my life where I still choose the flesh over the Holy Spirit, what steps is God calling me to take so I can refocus my walk and grow spiritually?
Romans 15:13 (NIV) May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in Him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.
