Letter from the Heart #6: Save — More Than the Body

Save — More Than the Body

Police departments are needed in today’s society, and most people would agree with that statement. Their duties and responsibilities protect citizens and property. Not to mention crime prevention — let’s face it, we live among wicked and evil men. Sadly, crimes such as murder, theft, and sexual assault require investigation, gathering evidence to identify those who committed these violations. Without a doubt, they help save a person’s physical body.

Fire departments are needed in today’s society, and most people would agree with that statement. Their duties and responsibilities prepare them for unforeseen emergencies as first responders. They rescue victims trapped in burning cars, houses, buildings, and natural disasters. They also respond to accidents, falls, and health crises, administering first aid when needed. Safety is their primary function. Without a doubt, they help save a person’s physical body.

Doctors are needed in today’s society, and most people would agree with that statement. In the medical field, there is a wide range of specialized professionals within the healthcare system. Their responsibilities include thorough medical examinations, treatment plans, prescribing medications, monitoring patients’ health, sharing diagnoses, documenting medical histories, and in some cases performing surgery. Without a doubt, they help save a person’s physical body.

Yet there is only One who can save not only the body but also the spirit — and that salvation is eternal. Eternity will be spent either with God or without Him. Too often, humanity does not take seriously the reality of life without God, living as if Jesus Christ will not one day judge His creation. We focus on temporary living, as if life were a game where we make our own rules. But mercy is God giving us another day to repent and live in holiness. Without holiness, we will not see God. The Creator of all things can do more than save the body — He can save both your physical body and your eternal spirit.

  • Matthew 10:28 (NKJV) And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. But rather fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.

  • Hebrews 12:14 (NKJV) Pursue peace with all people, and holiness, without which no one will see the Lord.
